Jean Laherrere
will be in Houilles to meet EFN members participating in the ANNUAL MEETING,
and will give us a 2 hour presentation on
the current situation regarding peak oil, after
the annual meeting of EFN.
See http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jean_Laherrère
His lecture will be fascinating.
As an oil-exploration
geologist, he is one of the co-founders of
ASPO-international (Association for the study of peak oil and gas
http://www.peakoil.net
) with Colin Campbell, father of the peak-oil theory, which
appeared in the 1990's and is now becoming mainstream reality http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Colin_Campbell_(geologist)
Jean Laherrere was the author
with Colin Campbell of the famous historical article on peak oil
titled "The
End of Cheap Oil" published in March 1998 in the Scientific
American.
Jean Laherrere then perfected the peak-oil theory, introducing the notion of "undulated plateau" instead of a unique peak. According to Jean Laherrere, the oil peak will not be a unique peak at a precise date, but a period running over several decades with an "undulated plateau" (ups and downs with several successive peaks and depressions) characterized by chaotic oil prices and availability, cycles of deeper and deeper economic recessions (phase which the world has now entered since several years, it seems). See http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Oil_peak
Jean Laherrere and I first
met in Canada 45 years ago, when he was working as a young
oil-exploration geologist with my father (Olivier Comby) on the
exploitation of Canadian oil. His family (Laherrere) and ours
(Comby) were neighbours in Calgary (Alberta) where a French oil
community then lived, gathering 100 or so French families working
on the great adventure of Canadian oil exploration at the end of
the 1960's (more precisely from 1966 to 1973). See Mike Byfield's
article published in the Daily Oil Bulletin : An
Ecologist For Nuclear Power In The Oilsands
Jean Laherrere will give
us his views on oil and gas resources, on the oil peak (the
undulated plateau), the energy-roots and causes of the economic
recession the world is now facing, and the forthcoming ups and
downs of oil & gas prices and their future (un)availability.
He will expose to us his vision of the world's current energy
situation and the energy mechanisms underlying our general
economy.
Jean Laherrere, acclaimed international lecturer, is a fascinating person, without concessions, a highly competent oil geologist, international expert of oil & gas exploration as well as for the estimation of oil resources in the world. See. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jean_Laherrère
The title of his presentation will be "Energy,
nature and humans" (in French :
"L'énergie, la nature et les hommes")
from 6:00 to 8:00 PM after the annual meeting of EFN (from 4:00 to
6:00 PM ) and before the informal buffet which will follow (from
8:00 to 10:00 PM).

EFN has continued to grow rapidly this year, and our action is developing in an increasing number of countries. EFN is now 16 years old and gathers over 10 000 members and supporters in 60 countries.
Many thanks to the volunteers who help us accomplish our task of informing the public about energy and the environment, in various countries.
The ANNUAL MEETING will be held partly in English and in French.

founder and President of EFN in France
in 1996)
and Patrick Moore (on the right, cofounder of
Greenpeace in Canada in 1971,
who now
supports EFN)
This year our good friend Patrick Moore (Honorary Chairman of the Canadian branch of EFN, EFN-CANADA) visited our ecological dream-house in Houilles (headquarters of EFN international) in the close suburbs of Paris. His venue, why he supports clean nuclear power, and his thoughts about EFN's ecological dream-house (designed and built by Bruno Comby) are described in an article (in French) published in the Courrier des Yvelines.
On
this occasion we have taped a filmed interview of Patrick which is just fantastic,
in which he shares with us his enthusiasm in favor of
protecting the environment, and of course in favor of clean
nuclear energy. His enthusiasm is still
intact after more than 40 years of action to protect
the environment. He tells us
about his life as an ecologist,
his childhood in the forests
of British Columbia, the
creation of
Greenpeace international which he cofounded with a few
friends in 1971 in
Vancouver, how he organized and directed Greenpeace
international and
Greenpeace-Canada during 15 years, protecting baby seals
with Brigitte Bardot,
developping Greenpeace, sailing on the seven seas on the
Rainbow Warrior
until the day it was sunk by the French secret services in
1985 (he was onboard on the day
the ship was sunk), taking this
young organization from being a small not-for-profit
initially incorporated with a few friends to transform it
into the influential international organization known as
Greenpeace today. He then quit with Greenpeace in the mid
1980's, and now strongly supports clean and safe nuclear
energy.
This
fascinating biographical interview of
Patrick Moore was video-taped in
Houilles recently. We will of course, present it on-line
ASAP on EFN's web site. This interview shows how and why
France is the example to be followed by the rest of the
world to develop civilian nuclear energy.
----
EFN was created in 1996 as an international organization in France, and now has incorporated branches active in various countries including Canada EFN-CANADA, the United States EFN-USA, Australia EFN-AUSTRALIA and several other countries.
Nuclear energy is deploying actively in numerous countries in response to the energy crisis, and also as a result of EFN's work of informing the public and politicians in key-countries about the benefits of clean nuclear energy since 16 years.
EFN NEEDS YOUR HELP AND SUPPORT : to inform the public, journalists and politicians about the many environmental benefits of nuclear energy, we need volunteers, donations, and useful contacts to create new branches in as many regions and countries as possible.
Please let us know if you (or friends or colleagues around you) are willing to take an active part.
All contributions are welcome : you can help with the secretariate, web site, translations, newsletters, press-communication, for recruiting new members, distributing leaflets in your local area, organizing events, participating in public hearings, giving lectures in the name of EFN or other responsibilities.
Whether you would like to be
just an ordinary volunteer or a member of the Board of
Directors, please contact us:
