Dear friends, members, and correspondents of EFN,

These few words about EFN are written and sent to you from Bulgaria where the lecture I gave yesterday on "The Environmental Benefits of Nuclear Power" was very well received by the audience. EFN continues its growth and now gathers about 9000 members and supporters in 56 countries. Thank you all so much for your support and your work. EFN is a network and exists only because you all participate. A very special thanks to our local correspondents who are active to help us each in his own region.

EFN debates the future of nuclear energy with GREENPEACE on EURONEWS

A television debate was recorded on the 1st june 2007 for EURONEWS in the recording studio of the Paris Television Center, located in Paris.

EURONEWS is a TV information channel, very much the European equivalent of CNN.

EFN participated in the European Magazine AGORA directed by Valérie Zabriskie. We were opposed to the responsible of nuclear affairs at Greenpeace-France (Frédéric Marillier). It's not the first time : we had already debatted with him on several occasions on Europe 1 and BFM, two other european media.

The theme of the debate is "Nuclear energy and CO2 emissions". It is now being broadcasted in 7 languages by EURONEWS around the world, by cable, satellite and on the EURONEWS web site.

The recording lasted 40 minutes. After final cut, the debate is shortened to 8 minutes (which is a long time for a news item).

This magazine will be aired 10 times between saturday 9th and monday 11th June 2007. Here is the broadcasting schedule :

EFN has also participed recently in TV and radio debates in Australia, in the UK, in Canada, in Ireland...

The media are starting to wake up and to better understand the environmental benefits of nuclear power. Now, they present not only the point of view of antinuclear organizations but also more and more often the fact-based approach of nuclear scientists and of EFN. However, a lot of information work still remains to be done to inform the public through the media in a better manner. Scare-mongering (or even catastrophism) are more emotional, an easy-sell, and still often dominate true information on the television screens. EFN contributes by presenting positive, useful, balanced information to the public on the many benefits of nuclear power. We are glad to see that the general attitude of the media is evolving in this regard.

The nuclear renaissance... in Europe and around the world

In Europe, new reactors are now in construction in four countries : Finland (one EPR in construction at Olkiluoto, and another one in project), in France (one EPR in construction in Flamanville, Normandy), in Bulgaria (two VVER reactors at Belene) and at Ignalina in Lithuania. In the UK, the recently published White Paper announces that the existing reactors in the UK will be replaced by nuclear reactors (which amounts to between 10 and 20 reactors of 1000 to 1600 MW). Nuclear reactors are also envisaged in the Czech Republic (two additional reactors at Temelin), in Poland, in Portugal, in Switzerland...
Elsewhere in the world, China plans to build 30 reactors (to start with), and same in the USA and in Russia, while Japan, Korea, India, Brazil also speed up their nuclear programs. In Canada, 4 reactors which had been stopped are being restarted in Ontario (and an additional 2 are currently being worked on to bring them back online which means 6 of the 8 which shall be restarted.) and at least 4 new reactors are under consideration, not to mention the projects in New Brunswick and the oilsands area in northern Alberta.
South Africa will build at least 10 new large reactos of 1000 MW (or more) in addition to the two French reactors of 900 MW they already have at Koeberg and of which they are quite satisfied). Numerous nuclear-free countries (until now) are considering the possibility of a nuclear program : Australia, Turkey, Thailand, Indonesia, Vietnam... even Ireland and New-Zealand, two countries traditionnally anti-nuclear are starting to open the deabte (without any precise plans for the moment, but this is already a real revolution because not so long ago the subject was just a giant taboo in these countries).
And this is only the start ! In all these countries, EFN is active with the
media to inform the public about the environmental benefits of nuclear power.

THANK YOU ALL FOR SUPPORTING CLEAN NUCLEAR ENERGY !

This newsletter is free. Running a large organization such as EFN and setting up new branches represents a large amount of work and financial expenses, therefore volunteer help and/or financial donations (however modest or large they might be) are welcome to support our action and to help us establish new branches in new countries around the world.
