Dear friends of clean nuclear energy;

First of all, a few words about our recent lecture tour in Japan. The president of EFN was in Japan between October 25th and November 2nd, 2005, for a lecture trip including a press conference and lectures in different cities around the country. The press conference as well as the lectures which attracted up to over 300 participants were all successful, thanks to the perfect organization of our local correspondents in Tokyo, Matsue, Okayama, Sendai, Tsuruga and Osaka. Several press articles have been published or are in print, as well as a booklet in Japanese, developing the contents of the lecture, presenting the benefits of nuclear energy for the environment. 20 000 copies of this booklet will be distributed in January 2006 in Japan.

See: photo of the speaker.(wide), or close portrait. See: photos of the lectures. Many thanks to Hironobu, Mako, Dr Yumi Akimoto and all our other local correspondents in Japan for their warm welcome and the perfect organization of these lectures. The President of EFN USA, Berol ROBINSON, gave a successful lecture at the University of Arkansas on November 21 st, 2005 making "The Environmental Case For Nuclear Power". A presentation of this lecture can be seen here. An article was published on the next day November 22nd, 2005, in an Arkansas newspaper: see the article here. Bravo to Berol for this successful lecture !

Other recent EFN lectures were given in Brussels at the European Parliament, for the Trinity Greens in Dublin (Trinity University), in Sceaux, and Cambrai in France. All were successful.

"Energy supply is under threat. Climate change is producing a sense of urgency." therefore the construction of nuclear reactors in the UK should be "back on the agenda" said British Prime Minister Tony Blair today. This follows dozens of EFN's interviews and participation in debates on the British television and radio and in British media in the past year (about 10 times on the BBC alone). This declaration of Tony Blair today sparked debates and TV presentations on the subject. EFN received numerous phone calls and requests for interviews from journalists in London since last week, and just today, we participated in three different radio debates and news reports on the BBC and BBC WORLD SERVICE.

In France, EFN is now actively participating to both of the ongoing national public debates: one on the future of high-activity radioactive waste, and one on the construction of the new EPR reactor to be built at Flamanville in Normandy (Evolutionary Pressurized Reactor or European Pressurized Reactor). Meetings are held in the various regions of France on both of these subjects. The public is invited to participate in the debates. EFN is one of the major actors of the debate.

The EPR reactor being built in Finland and in France improves both safety and performance, and will provide 1600 MW of clean nuclear power. It is the most powerful nuclear reactor in the world.

Several new EFN documents have been prepared on this occasion, and can be downloaded on the web site. These documents on the EPR reactor and about nuclear waste are available in French for the moment. If some of our local correspondents wish to translate any of them, please do so, this would be useful to inform readers in other countries. Send us the translated versions and we will make them available on the web site.

Some fresh news from Canada : EFN has actively participated since October 2004 in the debate on the refurbishment of the Point Lepreau nuclear power plant. EFN published several papers in the local New Brunswick press since the end of 2004 and in 2005, and was interviewed by CBC RADIO (Canadian Broadcasting Corporation). We also sent a last-minute decisive letter to Bernard Lord, Premier of Brunswick, just a few days before he took his decision, which ended up being positive. The 635 MW nuclear reactor at Point Lepreau will therefore continue operating long after 2010 instead of being dismantled and replaced by gas turbines. This will avoid dumping several dozen million tons of CO2 into the atmosphere.

After the creation of EFN USA last year, EFN CANADA is now organizing itself and will soon be incorporated, thanks to Rodney and our local correspondents in CANADA. Patrick MOORE has accepted to be Honorary Chairman of EFN CANADA. Patrick Moore was one of the historical founders of Greenpeace more than thirty years ago and was the director of Greenpeace international for 7 years. He was also the founder and former President of Greenpeace Canada during 9 years. He left Greenpeace several years ago and now supports clean nuclear energy. "Nuclear energy is the only non-greenhouse gas-emitting power source that can effectively replace fossil fuels and satisfy global demand," Dr Moore said at the US House of Representatives Subcommittee on Energy and Resources in Washington, DC earlier this year. After our friend Pr James Lovelock in 2000 and late Bishop Hughe Montefiore last year, Patrick Moore is another world-famous figure of the environmental community who has joined EFN in supporting the environmental benefits of clean nuclear energy.

Our best wishes for a long life and lots of success for EFN CANADA. Please contact EFN by e-mail if you can help or if you have any suggestions to develop EFN in Canada nuc-caAecolo.org (spam prevention: replace A by @).

EFN now gathers over 8000 members and supporters in more than 56 countries.
